The role of women in peace processes around the world – 24th February 2013

On February 24th 2013, more than 60 women gathered in order to discuss how women can participate in negotiation processes. To the group, which comprised of activists, writers, journalists and academicians belonging to different social groups, Dr Nazan Üstündağ* made a presentation on the roles played by women during 102 peace talks realized around the world. Nazan showed us that peace negotiations range from power sharing to reconciling the society, all of which have a wide social impact. Women took part in only 25% of these peace talks; which actually proved to be much more successful in societalizing peace, thus creating a reconciled social tissue. During their involvement in peace and negotiation processes, women came up with alternative methods: some made peace among themselves, refusing to go to war when men took arms once again, some participated in talks and negotiations and voiced their gender based demands, while others acted as mediators, experts or moderators. Where women were excluded from the process, they created their own mechanisms for peace. This presentation thrilled us because it showed us that women definitely have to be at the peace table with their demands and representatives. Later, we split into two groups in order to discuss what we can do. All the participants agreed to take active part in the peace process. We decided to expand and deepen our discussions and hold a series of workshops and meetings. You can access the Turkish version of Nazan Üstündağ’s presentation in the Dosyamız section.
